GEI’s Mid-Atlantic area offices (Washington DC, Rockville MD and Charlottesville VA) continue to grow and are seeking an entry level Civil/Geotechnical Engineer. Under supervision of more senior staff, this individual will provide support to ongoing field and engineering design efforts. Field activities will include coordination and documentation of geotechnical and environmental soil borings; installation of wells and geotechnical instrumentation; collection of groundwater and soil samples; and oversight and documentation during construction. This individual will also provide support to ongoing design efforts that include preparation of design documents for foundations and excavations support systems; ground improvement; instrumentation; and environmental work. Projects include private developments, public infrastructure work, maritime, and others and typically include shallow and deep foundations, ground improvement, earth retention systems, and geotechnical instrumentation.
Essential Responsibilities & Duties
The desired skills include construction observation/ management, geotechnical and structural design, instrumentation design and interpretation, and technical specification support. Familiarity with basic excavation support design and foundation design is a plus. Other responsibilities include:
Supporting site investigations and site assessments including soil borings and testing, environmental sampling, and technical oversight of subcontractors
Coordinating and interpreting lab tests
Engineering analysis and calculations
Preparing technical memos, reports, and construction specifications
Observing and documenting field and construction activities
Designing and modifying drawings using AutoCAD
Minimum Qualifications
BS in Civil Engineering, or similar, with a geotechnical focus
MS in Geotechnical Engineering preferred
0-3 years of professional experience in civil/geotechnical/environmental engineering and consulting; knowledge and familiarity with engineering design processes
Experience with geotechnical design software
Experience with spatial analysis and visualization software such as Civil 3D, and GIS
Excellent technical writing and general communication skills
Construction observation/management experience is a plus
Computer-programming experience is a plus
Willingness and ability to travel as needed
Willingness and ability to perform field tasks in inclement conditions
40-hr OSHA/HAZWOPER training is a plus
Valid U.S. driver’s license
