We are seeking an experienced Resident Engineer to support our growing national construction management practice. This position will support, and in some cases lead, our construction management teams in the execution of CM projects. The Resident Engineer position focuses on the technical execution of the constructed work to ensure that it is in accordance with the design and contract documents and provides important support to other key CM functions such as change management and contractor payment verifications.
Resident Engineers at GEI also support our engineering teams by providing reviews and insights into constructability, construction means, methods, and sequencing, scheduling and cost estimating to help make our designs and contract packages as constructable and biddable as possible.

Essential Responsibilities & Duties
- Serve as Resident Engineer on construction projects with construction costs up to $100 million including, but not limited to, dams, spillways, levees, pipelines, pump stations, canals, wells, and groundwater recharge facilities.
- On small- to medium-sized jobs, report directly to the project Owner, and lead the project-specific CM team with functions including, but not limited to, Office Engineering, Construction Quality Assurance, Construction Inspection, Materials Testing, Contact Administration, Cost and Schedule Analysis and Document Control.
- On large jobs, report to the Construction Manager.
- Be based on-site full-time during project execution, or as appropriate for project and Client needs.
- Coordinate directly with the Construction Manager, project Owner, Designer and Contractor as part of the “leadership team” that will collaboratively bring the project to successful completion.
- Be responsible for the tracking, management and resolution of design-related correspondence between the Contractor, Owner and Designer. This includes, but is not limited to, Submittals, Requests for Information, Requests for Substitution, and Field Directives. Work directly with the Designer to expeditiously develop responses and solutions to keep the work on track while maintaining design intent.
- Be responsible for informing the Construction Manager and/or the project Owner of any cost, schedule, quality or safety implications of any design changes prior to implementing those changes with the Designer and Contractor.
- Support the Construction manager or project Owner in the assessment and negotiation of Change Orders with the Contractor.
- Be responsible for construction Quality Assurance, including the development of QA plans for specific jobs, the coordination and oversight of QA inspections, and the tracking and resolution of non-conforming work. Ensure that the Contractor’s submitted Quality Control Plan is satisfactory and coordinate directly with the Contractor to track their QC program and submitted results. For larger jobs, a Construction QA Manager or Lead Inspector may be provided to support this function, under the oversight of the Resident Engineer.
- Support the development of As-Built drawings by receiving and reviewing red-lined drawings from the contractor and working with either the Designer or the CM’s office engineer to develop final As-Built drawings.
- Monitor construction progress against the accepted baseline construction schedule and notify the Construction Manager or project Owner of deviations.
- Review schedule updates and progress reports from the Contractor, note any inaccuracies for correction before formally accepting and routing to the Construction Manager or project Owner.
- Review Requests for Payment from the Contractor, note any inaccuracies for correction before formally accepting and routing to the Construction Manager or project Owner.
- Support additional CM services as needed including, but not limited to, Risk Management, Dispute Resolution and Claims Analysis.
- Mentor and guide GEI staff to develop their CM skills during project execution.
- Support internal CM training programs.
- Support hiring efforts including review of candidate resumes and participation in candidate interviews.
- Support GEI marketing and business development efforts including, but not limited to, strategy workshops, proposal and fee development, proposal interviews, Client relations and participation at industry events.
- Support GEI administrative and operations teams with project reporting and invoicing.
Minimum Qualifications
- Professional Engineer’s license.
- Bachelor’s degree in engineering or related field.
- 8 years or more of previous related professional experience.
- Excellent interpersonal, communication, writing, team leadership, and collaboration skills.
- Strong capability to work remotely and independently while maintaining productivity and motivation.
- Familiarity with MS Office, Bluebeam Revu, MS Project, Primavera P6, and other typical design and construction related software.
- Ability to take and pass all GEI required construction safety related training courses.
- Physically able to participate or perform construction site inspections.
- Willing to travel to jobsites. Total travel up to 60% time.
- Valid U.S. driver’s license.
Preferred Qualifications
- Master’s degree in engineering or related field.
- 15 years or more of previous related professional experience.
- Experience as an RE or CM on large heavy civil projects, such as, dams, spillways, levees, pipelines, pump stations, and canals.
