Your role at GEI.  
 
The Lansing, Michigan office of GEI is seeking highly motivated individuals to fill an intern/seasonal position during the field season of 2024 to perform a broad range of ecological-related services. The employment time frame is desired to be mid-May to mid-August with flexibility on specific start/end dates. The ideal candidate will have relevant experience in biology, ecology, or environmental science and will be comfortable working in a variety of field conditions. They will use and maintain equipment, vehicles, and power tools, and will use technology (GPS, field tablets, computer) to document activities. This position requires an introductory level of skill and experience.  
 
The position will pay between $18.00-$22.00 an hour based on candidate experience. The ideal candidate will be willing to occasionally work more than 40 hours a week and be comfortable working in a variety of field and office conditions. The position will be overtime pay eligible.  
 
Essential Responsibilities & Duties  
  •  Support of fieldwork efforts including, but not limited to:
    • Biological assessments such as freshwater mussel surveys, fish and benthic macroinvertebrate surveys, and protected species surveys.
    • Water quality-related assessments in support of contaminant and nutrient studies.
    • Ecological restoration projects
  • Work under physically demanding conditions in variable weather and sometimes difficult terrain.
  • A typical work day consists of 8-12-hour days and may include irregular hours (early start times) in excess of 40 per week.
  • Traveling throughout Michigan and adjacent states, likely including multiple nights per week out of town working at remote locations and to work irregular hours (30-55 hours per week, with overtime pay for more than 40 hours a week).
  • Preparing reports and other project-related documents
  • Literature searches and review
  • Collecting field data, data summary/analysis, report writing
Minimum Qualifications  
  • High School Diploma required, in pursuit of BS degree in Biological Sciences, Natural Resources, or Ecological-related studies is required.
  • Valid driver’s license is required.
  • Ability to perform fieldwork, including assignments with overnight or extended travel.
  • Comfort working outdoors in remote areas in heat, cold, and wet conditions.
  • Experience with technical writing.
  • Willingness to cross-train as needed to support restoration and remediation projects.
  • Basic understanding of Microsoft Office software.

  • Ability to work well independently and with a diverse, multi-disciplinary team in a fast-paced work environment.
  • Effective time management and follow-through, with the ability to simultaneously work on and lead multiple tasks/projects and meet project deadlines.
  • Willingness to work on a wide array of projects.
  • Standard First Aid, CPR, and Pesticide Applicator's License are preferred.
  • Ability to identify native and non-native fish, invertebrate, plant, and animal species.
  • GPS/ArcGIS experience is a plus.
  • Scuba diving certification is highly desired, but not required.
  • Michigan boater’s safety certification.
  • Drive and operation of trucks with trailers, ATVs/UTVs and small engines/pumps.
